I hate nettles, truly HATE them.

Had to rant a bit before today's weeding as I know that I'll be so pissed off after it. My flower beds are full of nettles and it's a quite a job to get rid of them. Yesterday I spend 2 hours fighting them and the result being that my hands were totally burned by them and full of scrapes from roses - I look like I've been attacked by a cat.

It's a pity that Mr. Skellington is a such a small guy as his bones wouldn't have any problem with the nettles. I think that he should do his share around here, as I'm building him (and his ever growing family who are relocating from US) a house, but no, there hi is doing a split in the chair on top of the table with a berry crumble in his hand (a new position by my daughter yesterday, I'll take a pic later on). Lazy little guy.

And yes, all the gardeners say that where nettle grows the soil is just perfect, full of nutrition for plant, but I'll swear that the next person who says that phrase to me I'll smack her :D Well, did some finds under the nettle bushes (yes, they grow very vigorously in my garden), a couple of hollyhocks have survided under the snow which is a really nice suprise :)

Now off to feed the horses and then an hours walk in the woods with the dogs - which is a hell in the summer as there's some wetland and the little evil ticks live there and guess are the dogs full of them... I hate them.

The summer time is wonderful with the warm weather, flowers, berries and fruit but the weeds, mosquitos and ticks make it a less attracting season :)

  3. Glenda :D :D They actually would be quite effective Air Force, you gather them all up and armies would run away screaming :D

Synnove, the ranting somehow helps a lot :D But the ticks are truly awful, they're so small that you miss them easily and when the bite you - yak! I had last summer two of them sucking my blood, they are so disgusting. I usually kill them with my lighter, the do this little pop-sound and die - happy for that, evil me :D They are actually quite stupid living creatures, stick to an animal, suck their blood so that they are 100 times bigger than in the beginning and then they just lay in the ground and hope that no bird etc. will eat them - what's the point? Well, disgusting little things anyways.

  4. Nettles in the garden - I suspect that you've been fertilising with horse poo Ira. Being taken over by nettles, ticks and skeletons is not fun!

  5. Dear dear Ira, there is nothing like a warm bowl of nettlesoup with lots of garlic and then a freshly baked nettle bread. A cheap and very nutricios meal ;0) Have to admit I love it!

  6. Yes, horse poo is being used in this garden a lot as for some reason we have quite a lot of it :D But the soil here is just too good anyways, as the nettles grow all over the place. But I shouldn't complain as it seems what ever I stick to the ground just grows and grows, this year I won't be planting any tomatoes in the greenhouse as they have invaded the whole thing in the previous summers, I really had hard time to get in the greenhouse as the tomatoes were over 3 meters long :D And I have strange weeds - rucola is also growing more and more here - it shouldn't survive winter? But I'm a bit sad as my pear and apricot trees died last winter.

  7. Annie - well, we would have enough nettle to feed an army :D Should I send you 10 kilos nettles :D ? I'll have to try the nettle bread some time, I suspect that the nettle soup tastes a bit like spinach soup? My kids hate is so not serving it to them :D

  8. Ha ha ha :-)
Think about who has the luck of having ONLY mosquitoes, ticks and nettles and no dogs, horses and garden!
I assure you that I know people like that ...
But to employ Mr. Skellington to weed seems a good idea: Just stop stay all day at the gym and not be helpful!

  9. Thanks Ira, but NO thank you! I already have enough nettles for feeding the danish army, you just take care of the finnish ;0) Actually I could need some help from Mr Skellington and would love for him to come to Denmark for the summer. I´ll take good care of him...or maybe he could send one of his familymembers to help me in my nettle picking work?

  10. HaHa, you don't have to slap me, 'cause I am not going to state the obvious.......... :-) However, I know what you mean. We've got it all here too, beautiful summers, ticks, mosquitoes, sandflies, spiders, snakes and yes, persistent weeds, some of which I am allergic to. And you know what's worse? I simply love the outdoors! Never mind, we'll get over it. Hope your day will end better than it started...... Cheers

  11. Annie, I'll consider it :D

Flora, in my opinion mosqiutos are enough :D

Marion, well, you would be safe anyways as you live too far to be slapped :D Thank goodness we don't have any poisonous snakes around here for some reason, maybe there's so many ants that they stay away. And here in Finland we don't have any poisonous spiders, happy for that also :) And no sandflies or crocodiles - actually the ticks and nettles seem quite small inconvenience compared to Australian evil little man eating animals :D

And I love outdoors also, left the nettles to peace for a moment and mowed the lawn. Now off to take the kidst to the training then some mini construction work to be done today :)

  13. sagrario - we use the liquid that you put to the dogs back, but even it won't keep the ticks away as here's so much of them. But you're right, it's nice and warm and the nature is beautiful :)

  14. Haha! Evil little man eating animals ;) The only man eating animals in my garden are mosquitoes and occasionally a tick and very rarely a snake! No lions, no wolves, only in the zoo. Plenty of weeds but I put the chopped up pine bark mulch very thick on the ground, it stops most of the weeds.
